Mezzanine Floor – Floor Finishes
Mezzanine floors were originally a storage industry product. Over the last 30 years mezzanines have evolved and are utilised in numerous industries.
Examples are;
– Plant and equipment support structures
– Access platforms and walkways
– Retail floor space
– Office floor space
– Walkways to multi racking
– Conveyor support structures with walkways
In all mezzanine situations there is a steel structure but floor finishes can vary.
- Timber decking – The preferred flooring on the mezzanine market. Used for storage, retail and office mezzanines.
- Chequer plate – Used to re-enforce over timber decking for heavy pallet floors or for machinery/process plant installation.
- Concrete – Metal deck over laid with concrete for heavy pallet and machinery loads or where high level of noise integrity is required.
- Metal deck – Access platforms and walkways across machinery.GP Fabrications manufacture mezzanine floors in all industries and can offer a quotation for any floor finish required.
Mezzanine Floor – Handrails and Staircases
- GP Fabrications manufacture mezzanine floors as ‘turn key’ projects with complete handrailing, staircases, conveyors and goods lift.
- We have a standard design for handrails and stairs on storage mezzanine floors. If our standard design does not meet your requirements we can manufacture to suit any bespoke requirements.

Standard handrail is from 50X50SHS with 34Ø galvanized tube for knee and top rails.

A standard staircase complies with part ‘M’ building control regulations.
Stringers from 100X50 RHS. 2 Rail handrail from 50X50SHS & 50X25RHS. Treads are chequer plate, closed riser face and finished in black machinery enamel with yellow nosing’s.

Most mezzanine floors require pallet gates. Specify pallet size and we will manufacture a pallet loading gate to comply with your specification.

Fire protection & staircase enclosures
- Generally if a mezzanine is storage only and length/breadth are less then 20M local authority would not ask for fire protection.
- If fire protection is required GP Fabrications can undertake this work.
- The standard method in the storage industry is to provide fire protection using plasterboard fascia’s, suspended ceilings and column covers.
- In some instances stairs may need enclosing in fire rated partitions.
- GP Fabrications can also undertake installation of fire rated partitions all as local authority requirements.

Column covers – available galvanized for white finish.

Plaster board fascia’s to seal fire integrity to open edges.

Suspended ceiling to under side to give one hour fire protection.

F.A.Q.
Here are some of the frequently asked questions about Mezzanine floors, but if this does not answer your question please contact us
Can anyone manufacture a mezzanine floor?
Mezzanines including handrails and stairs are structural components. To manufacture structural components fabricators have to be certified to BSEN1090-1 and Execution class 2 standards.
Does a mezzanine floor need building control approvals?
Yes. All mezzanine floors need building control approvals. GP Fabrications will submit for building control approval as part of our design service.
Do you pay a fee for building control applications?
Local authority will require a submission fee and site inspection fee – fee needs to be agreed with local authority before submission. GP Fabrications will prepare and submit building control application on our customers behalf as part of our design service.
How many stairs are required on a mezzanine floor?
GP Fabrications designers will advise and assist in determining stair requirements and locations. As a ‘guide’ stairs should be positioned adjacent to fire escape door and so the maximum travel distance with one stair is 18M or 45M with two stairs.
Do I need to install fire protection on my mezzanine floor?
Mezzanine floors for storage where length and breadth is under 20M do not usually require fire protection. GP Fabrication designer will be able to advise on requirements for fire protection.
Will I need a foundation to support my mezzanine floor?
Mezzanine floors are economical structures when the design allows you to support on existing floor slab without the need to install new foundations. Mezzanine floor columns impose point loads on floor slabs. Structural engineer will need to confirm point load capacity is adequate.
What are my options if floor slab capacity is not adequate?
GP Fabrications in house designers will discuss options available. Column grid can be reduced (more columns), bigger baseplates or reduction in imposed loads all assist in reducing point loads imposed on floor slab.
